I’ve got a lot of time for Alfa Mist, the London-based songwriter and producer who does a mean line in modern, British Jazz. I signed up for his mailing list so I don’t miss out on anything interesting coming out of his Sekito label.
A little while back they announced a new artist called Jsphynx would be releasing their debut album on the imprint. Jsphynx is the performing name of Johnny Woodham, a talented trumpeter who has worked with the likes of Mr Jukes, Tom Misch, Loyle Carner and Jordan Rakei.
Knowing Woodman has worked with them immediately piqued my interest. At the time there was only one track to try on Spotify but I liked it so took a punt.
I’m glad I took a chance as the album is very good. I’ve said it before, I struggle to review jazz records, I just know what I like and I like this! Moody trumpets, big bass and some excellent musicianship. I’ve listened to this album a few times and each time it sounds better.
If you fancy getting some excellent modern jazz in your life, the album is available on double vinyl via the artist's Bandcamp page for £24
Tracks To Try: ‘Reflex’, ‘Kush’, ’King Cobra’, ‘Palmers’, Skippy’.
